Autodesk's Pro Line Gets Cloudy With Fusion 360

Autodesk announced today its latest professional design software, Fusion 360 — which will be the company’s first full-featured, cloud-based design software — as downloadable Mac or PC apps.

Autodesk, a longtime leader in industrial CAD software, has recently expanded into the consumer products space with its free 123D line, primarily utilized as mobile apps. Now, with their release of Fusion 360, the company is taking their professional line online as well, integrating both industrial design and engineering capabilities.

“It really is the first cloud-based design offering that’s going to be available for folks,” says Grant Rochelle, Autodesk’s senior director of manufacturing industry marketing. “It’s completely open, in terms of the kinds of data it can read. This can work with data that comes from anywhere.”

The motivation behind the move is both to make long-distance collaboration easier, and to bring more users to pro-level, offering monthly subscription-based pricing instead of the traditionally steep up-front pricing on design software.

“We’re seeing this as a great jumping-off point for folks, especially if they’ve been using tools like 123D, and they really want to get a lot more serious about their designs,” says Rochelle. “This is really going to help them. It’s also going to be very, very appealing for the very small business.”

Autodesk will be offering a beta version of the software over the next few months, and intends to release the full version in the first half of 2013. Pricing isn’t available yet, though Rochelle says it may be sold on a tiered plan, with higher monthly rates for versions with more features. The company already offers more niche cloud-based simulation and product lifecycle management software.
